Background

Emily Davies founded a new college for women near Cambridge in 1869. Later called Girton College, it provided higher education for women.

Newnham College, also near Cambridge, was founded in 1871.

London University opened all its degrees to women in 1878.

Other universities in England then followed suit.

Oxford and Cambridge did not open their degrees fully to women until 1919 and 1948 respectively.
